Modern Lawn Edges for Clean, Defined Landscapes

Modern lawn edges are precast concrete edging units designed to create clean boundaries between lawns, pathways, and gardens. They provide both functional and aesthetic benefits, keeping landscapes tidy while adding structural definition

Installed partially below ground level, the edging units create a permanent physical barrier that grass cannot cross. The visible top portion provides a clean, finished edge that defines the boundary and guides mower wheels for perfect trimming.

At Majorcon Precast, our modern lawn edges are engineered to enhance landscape design while preventing soil erosion and grass overgrowth. Build with confidence. Build with Majorcon Precast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clean edges transform a landscape from ordinary to professional. Here are answers to the questions we receive from landscapers, gardeners, and homeowners.

Installation depth depends on application:

ApplicationBelow GroundAbove GroundTotal Height
Standard lawn edge100mm – 125mm25mm – 50mm150mm
Anti-rhizome barrier150mm – 200mm25mm175mm – 225mm
Driveway edge150mm50mm – 75mm200mm – 225mm
Erosion control150mm+25mm – 50mm200mm+

General rule: Two-thirds below ground, one-third above ground provides stability and effective grass barrier.

Step-by-step installation:

  1. Mark out: Use string line or hose to mark desired edge line

  2. Excavate trench: Dig to required depth plus 25mm for bedding

  3. Add bedding: 25mm sharp sand or lean mortar for levelling

  4. Position edging: Place units, checking line and level

  5. Backfill: Firm soil or concrete behind edging

  6. Compact: Tamp soil firmly against back of units

  7. Finish: Level adjacent soil or lawn to final grade

For curved installations:

  • Use shorter units (500mm) for tighter curves

  • Consider flexible steel edging for very tight radii

  • Pre-formed radius units available for consistent curves

Yes, with proper technique:

Slope TypeInstallation Method
Gentle slopeStep units following ground contour
Moderate slopeInstall with consistent step in units
Steep slopeConsider terracing with retaining

On slopes:

  • Ensure units are firmly bedded

  • Use concrete haunching for stability

  • Install drainage if water runoff concentrates

  • Consider longer units for straighter lines

Several options for curved edges:

MethodBest ForTechnique
Short unitsGentle to medium curvesUse 500mm units, angle joints slightly
Radius unitsConsistent curvesPre-formed curved units to specific radius
Flexible edgingTight, irregular curvesSteel or plastic edging (alternative)
Cut unitsOne-off curvesCut standard units on site (requires skill)

For professional results on planned curves, order pre-formed radius units to match your design.

Lawn edging serves multiple functions:

FunctionBenefit
Grass barrierPrevents grass spreading into garden beds
Clean linesCreates professional, manicured appearance
Mowing guideAllows mower wheels to run along edge for perfect trim
Soil retentionHolds garden bed soil in place
Mulch barrierKeeps mulch in beds, not on lawn
Weed preventionReduces grass and weed invasion into beds
